Every time there are news reports of a terror attack ,apart from the people whose lives are completely shattered there are also some more innocent citizens who bear the wrath of the offenders in question using Wireless (Wi-fi) networks to send e-mails claiming responsibility of the blasts .

This came to light majorly during the 2 recent blasts and made me tense .

I use a BSNL broadband connection with a Wi-fi router and have been laid back about authenciation and not used it at all. Though i did want it initially, the Junior Engineer @ BSNL made such a uncanny remark saying “its not possible madam” that i gave up hopes and slowly forgot all about it.

But today,i looked up the net and found the solution to it

I am pasting an extract from this site

I will give you a vague idea !

login to http://192.168.1.1 and enter username/password . Normally it is admin/admin

Click on wireless -> Basic Wireless
Enable wireless [Check that box]
in SSID, give some name (you can change that utstarcom)
then click on save/apply

Now click on Security tab
For a beginner, you can click network authentication as open, WEP encryption key enabled, and choose 128 bit,
choose 1
then type any 13 Hexa digits (0-9, A-F) in 1st row !

eg :ABCDEFFEDCBA4 (total 13) Letter CASE matters !

then save n apply

now open network connection, check for wireless network, see the name you have mentioned, double click it, give the 13 digit key when asked for encryption key !

You should be able to browse with security enabled ! Dont ever keep your wireless open to public !

I tried it and this works 100% for BSNL,any technical queries can be answered at this forum for all BSNL users . AUTHENCIATE YOUR WI-FI TODAY !

So now when i click “Detect Wirelss networks”,all the networks of my neighbours pop up but mine comes with a warning “authenciation required” which surely made me heave a sigh of relief :)

PS : Slashdot recently came out with a news article -Read this

I also found this post interesting and this news report

Just type in “wifi access by terrorsists” @google and you can see an astonishing number of reports !

i am not sure if there are any cracks to these methods but do let me know if there are any alternate methods/cracks for this method.

Thats the problem with improper knowledge. You novices just take all things for granted and start using net/mobiles without knowing there are people whose only aim is to create nuisance.
BTW there is another way of protecting wi-fi..
- Change ur router password. ie pw of 192.168.1.1
- Just add your lappy MAC address in router mac filter. None but those mac address can use the wi-fi.

cheers,
/A
